The road to equality for women is long and winding, with countless obstacles, plunging dips and soaring peaks to overcome.

The great challenge is to keep walking forward - left foot, right foot, one foot in front of the other - no matter how hard it may seem or how much we feel we may have strayed from the path. 

In the West, women lament the glass ceiling and the desire to be equally recognised and praised in the workplace or acknowledged for the unpaid hours spent dedicated to making a house a home.

In developing countries, the injustices burrow far deeper, from young girls being denied a basic education to those tragically forced into the sex trade.

A new film, Girl Rising, explores "the power of education to transform societies and presents the stories of nine girls around the world".

Some of Hollywood's most celebrated actresses have come together to give their hand to the film, including Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway.

As part of International Women’s Day (Friday March 7), Girl Rising will be screening in Darwin at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT.
