It's been described as the biggest funding announcement in Screen Australia's history.
The Gender Matters program announced today has funded three million dollars worth of projects aimed at improving the number of women in key creative roles in Australia's film and television industry.
Weave Films is delighted to announce the project News Junkies has been supported as part of the program's Brilliant Stories slate.
News Junkies is a web series about wannabe hotshot journalist Elle Walker, who gets more than she bargains for when she moves from Sydney's Bondi Beach to a tabloid television newsroom in remote northern Australia.
The series is a collaborative project between Emma Masters (Director / Producer), Kristy O'Brien (Producer) and Lucy McNally (Writer).
The three have been friends since working as journalists at ABC News in Darwin.
"Darwin is a perfect place to set a drama," Emma says.
"It's beautifully tropical green and lush, has an array of characters, is a melting pot of important social issues and has some great colourful politics to boot.
"Basing it in a news room seemed natural for us, but as with all drama, our characters and situations are fictional.
"We're excited to be supported alongside some inspirational and creative women in the industry."
Screen Australia's support will focus on development of the series and a pilot.
